Chamber wants ban on trailer trucks to go

Our Bureau

New Delhi , April 14

THE PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI) has urged the Government to withdraw the ban imposed on movement of trailer trucks on Delhi roads.

In a representation to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Mr K.N. Memani, President, PHDCCI said, "No restrictions should be placed on movement of containers to and from Inland Container Depot (ICD), Tughlakabad. Any such restrictions on movement of goods would result in loss of deadlines."

ICD, Tughlakabad caters to almost the entire northern region of the country and most of the export-import cargo originating and meant for the region is cleared and routed from there.

Mr Memani also pointed out that a similar action taken a few months back had resulted in total collapse of movement of import and export cargo from the region.

PHDCCI said that the distance required to be covered by trailers would increase by about four-six times, as trailer trucks coming from Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh would have to take the route to Tughlakabad via Badarpur.

As per an estimate, about 400 trailers serve the exporting units based in Delhi itself.
