Chinese garments come cheap

CHINESE garment exports to US are priced much lower than prices on offer at stores in India. There is no doubt that the Indian middle and upper classes would simply throng the markets to acquire world quality products at these prices.
Branded shirts for instance, and trousers, can be had only at prices in excess of Rs 300-400 and Rs 400-500, respectively in the retail market in India.
Taking a dollar as equal to Rs 42 or Rs 43, and allowing for a 20 per cent trade margin, Chinese shirts and trousers would still cost Rs 100-200 less than items of comparable quality that are available on the local market.
The same thing goes for lingerie, underwear, and indeed for all sorts of items, right down to infants apparel.
All of these were low priced to begin with, even before the Chinese gave hefty price cuts on selected items to steal a march over potential competitors (particularly India) after the lifting of quota restrictions on January 1.
