Railways Indian Railways handles 601.89 mt of freight Our Bureau
New Delhi , April 15 INDIAN Railways transported 601.89 million tonnes (mt) of revenue earning freight in fiscal 2004-05, compared to 557.39 mt in the 2003-04 financial year. This is 1.89 mt higher than the revised target of 600 mt fixed for the 2004-05 financial year. Out of the total, the highest freight of 92.52 mt was carried by South East Central Railways, followed by 73.07 mt by South Eastern Railways. East Coast Railways transported 70.46 mt, East Central Railways 58.26 mt and South Central Railways transported 51 mt, according to the provisional data prepared by Indian Railways. Central Railways followed by carrying 42.98 mt, and Eastern Railways registered 42.47 mt of freight transportation during the 2004-05 financial year. Northern Railways transported 41.4 mt whereas South Western Railways carried 31.75 mt of revenue earning freight. Western and Southern Railways that transported 28.35 mt and 23.19 mt respectively followed South Western Railways. West Central Railways carried 19.97 mt during April 2004-March 2005, whereas North Frontier Railways transported 9.94 mt. On a year-on-year basis, all zones excluding four (Northern, North Central, North Western and Southern Railways) have transported higher freight. South East Central Railways recorded the highest absolute year-on-year growth by transporting an additional 9.5 MT freight.
