Karnataka petrol dealers to join protest

Our Bureau

Mangalore , April 17

THE Dakshina Kannada and Udupi Districts Petroleum Dealers Association has decided to join the nationwide protest on April 18 seeking a hike in minimum dealer's commission.

Petroleum retail outlets in these districts will remain closed from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday.

The Federation of All-India Petroleum Traders has given a call for a nationwide protest on April 18.

Addressing presspersons here on Saturday, the President of the association, Mr K.C. Shetty, said the dealer's commission, which was 1.92 per cent for motor spirit and 1.69 per cent for high-speed diesel in 2001, came down to 1.59 per cent and 1.27 per cent, respectively, in 2005.

Operating expenses are going up every year due to rise in minimum wages and power tariff, and high capital investment with every petroleum price hike. In such a situation, it is necessary to have a minimum dealer's commission of 5 per cent on the product value for the feasible running of a retail outlet, said Mr Shetty. The association has 120 members, he added.

Demanding uniform pricing of petroleum products across the country, Mr Satish N. Kamath, Secretary of the association, said such a pricing would curb inter-State smuggling of petroleum products.
