HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Government has assured traders that it would withdraw the 4 per cent tax under VAT (value-added tax) system.

Giving this assurance to a delegation of salt traders, Mr K. Ramakrishna, Minister for Commercial Taxes, said the relaxation would cover common salt, mostly consumed by the poor, and produced by Indian companies. Multinational companies need to pay the tax, he said.

In a statement here on Sunday, Mr H.D. Darwa, President of Twin Cities Salt Packets Suppliers' Association, said the tax would be withdrawn at the first review meeting on the new tax system in June.
