THE Empowered Committee of State Finance Ministers on value-added tax has asked States to set up VAT call centres to enable better exchange of views between trade and the Government on the new tax system.
"Our interactions with trade has to be much more intense. It (VAT) is a new tax," Dr Asim Dasgupta, Chairman of the committee, told reporters here on Saturday.
Dr Dasgupta said the empowered committee would invite traders for more frank discussions if the latter felt there were many ground-level problems.
He hoped the committee would soon be able to resolve the other problems raised by Uttar Pradesh, which is yet to implement VAT. "There are 15 problems that have been raised as concerns by Uttar Pradesh. We have resolved majority of the problems. But few issues are still not resolved, which we hope to do so very soon," Dr Dasgupta said.
The Agriculture Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Mr Ashok Bajpai, was the only Minister from the non-VAT States to attend Saturday's meeting of the empowered committee.
Besides the five BJP-ruled States of Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh and Jharkhand, the States of Tamil Nadu, Uttaranchal and Uttar Pradesh have not yet introduced VAT.
