Panel to monitor Kerala water supply scheme

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala Government is actively considering the setting up of a high-power committee, headed by the Chief Secretary, to ensure transparency in the implementation of the JBIC-aided water supply scheme in the State.
The Water Resources Minister, Mr Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, told newspersons here on Monday that the Kerala Water Authority had been directed to fix afresh the term and conditions containing in all the tender documents pertaining to the scheme in accordance with international practices.
The tender conditions would be framed in such a way as to ensure better competition for contracts and thereby protecting the interests of the State, he said.
The Minister sought to allay allegations regarding the purchase of DI pipes as per Package I of the project. He said that no tender had been submitted in this regard as yet.
The Rs 1,787-crore water supply scheme, aided by Japan Bank for International Cooperation, is meant to implement five water supply projects in the State covering 43 lakh beneficiaries.
