A national seminar on fibre quality standards is to be held here on Saturday. The one-day seminar will highlight the current status of cotton breeding, improved varieties/hybrids and the fibre needs of the spinning industry.
It will also focus on the textile industry's concern about fibre quality standards and the need to formulate a strategy for an accelerated cotton-breeding programme. Organised by the Southern India Mills Association's Cotton Development and Research Association (SIMA-CDRA) and the South India Cotton Association (SICA), the seminar will be a forum for the spinners and the cotton breeders to understand each other's needs for the development of cotton varieties. Scientists from the Central Institute of Cotton Research, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Central Institute for Research on Cotton Technology and South India Textile Research Association will attend the event.
A national survey on cotton (2005) and a research document on cotton carried out by the farm scientist, Dr S. S. Narayanan, will be released during the seminar.
