Shipping NMPT plans to deepen channel Our Bureau
Mangalore , April 19 THE New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) is planning to deepen the channel at a cost of Rs 400 crore, according to its Chairman, Mr P. Tamilvanan. Speaking at a trade meet, jointly organised by the Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) and NMPT, Mr Tamilvanan said that a proposal has been submitted to the Government in this regard. The present depth of the channel is 15.1 metres, and major industrial units such as Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd want to bring bigger vessels to the port. The port wants to deepen the channel up to 17 metres. The NMPT is also planning to promote cruise shipping. It has sent a Rs 2.05-crore proposal to the Government on developing infrastructure in this regard. To a request of the KCCI President, Mr A. Srinivasa Rao, that the port should provide facilities such as visa on landing and immigration to the foreign tourists, Mr Tamilvanan said that he would discuss the matter with the authorities concerned. He hoped that the early completion of the Hassan-Mangalore railway line would help in attracting more container cargo to the port. NMPT is offering 25 per cent concession to container vessels on vessel-related charges, he said. The port has planned projects such as the construction of multipurpose deep draught berth, dry-dock facilities, and a container terminal on BOT basis. Mr Tamilvanan said that wearing helmet inside the port premises will be made compulsory for both the staff and port users from May 1. Mr Srinivasa Rao requested that the KCCI be provided with a trusteeship in the NMPT board. Stating that the special purpose vehicle for the formation of Mangalore special economic zone will be formed soon, he said NMPT can also become a partner in it. The KCCI Vice-President, Capt J.P. Menezes, said that NMPT could think of using the Kudremukh berth at the port in a productive manner to avoid pre-berthing delay. The port could think of modernising its berth to the new design of vessels, he added.
