Glenmark Pharma division for GPs

Our Bureau

Hyderabad , April 19

GLENMARK Pharmaceuticals Ltd (GPL) has launched a new division - Milieus, to cater to the needs of general practitioners (GPs).

It will also help in addressing issues thrown up by the new patent regime, especially with regard to the need to provide acute care drugs at affordable prices.

Glenmark proposes to address GPs in metros, non-metros and rural areas with the help of a carefully selected basket of products that include anti-infective, cough and cold, analgesic and anti-inflammatory, and gastroenterology therapy areas.

Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, the GPL Director, Domestic Formulations, Mr A.S. Mohanty, said the company has the advantage of pre-1995 molecules, which were considered gold standard molecules, to address the shortage of acute care dugs in the new context.

The company proposes to focus initially on five major States of the country - Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Orissa, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh - which account for nearly 50 per cent the nation's pharma products consumption, and to spread across the country later in three phases.

Highlighting the importance of the new division, Mr Mohanty said, "Milieus will bring a change in our orientation from a company targeting only specialists to a company reaching out a larger number of doctors in every part of the country. Our production facilities are along international standards and hence we have the benefit of providing quality products at low prices. This, in turn, will definitely help GPs offer better and affordable treatment to their patients."

As against a time of 2-3 three years usually taken for a speciality division to breakeven, GPL expects Milieus to achieve this during the first full year of operations itself thanks to the company's advantage of back-to-back integrated manufacturing facilities. The company expects the new division to record sales volume of Rs 18-20 crore during the first year of operations, Mr Mohanty said.
