Chennai , April 19

HINDUSTAN Motors expects to sell this year at least 1,500 Ambassador cars that run either on compressed natural gas or liquefied petroleum gas — five times higher than the cars sold last year, the company's Executive Vice-President, Mr Ashwani Dubey, said here on Tuesday.

Speaking to journalists on the sidelines of the launch of the company's `LPG Ambassador' in Chennai, Mr Dubey said that the car was Bharat Stage-III compliant.

As an inaugural offer, the company has announced a price of Rs 2.99 lakh for the first 100 cars, against the regular price of Rs 3.53 lakh.

The cars are fitted with an LPG equipment made by BRC Auto of Italy. Mr Dubey said that other Ambassador cars could be retrofitted with the LPG equipment and the compatible engine, for about Rs 1 lakh. The launch was made in the presence of the Chairperson of the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board, Ms Girija Vaidyanathan. Mr Dubey requested the Tamil Nadu Government to "support" non-polluting vehicles by offering a sales tax holiday for about six months.

Ms Vaidyanathan said that if Hindustan Motors would give a formal proposal, it could be put up to the department concerned for action.
