Kerala Govt. reviews progress of port-based economic zone

THE Fast Track Project Department of the State Government has held a meeting at Kochi Port to review the progress of establishing the port-based economic zone (PBEZ) and other projects relating to National Highway and rail connectivity to international container transhipment terminal at Vallarpadam.

In the meeting convened by Mr Gyanesh Kumar, Secretary of the Fast Track Project Department, progress regarding PBEZ including land acquisition works for the road and rail connectivity was discussed.

The finalised survey plan of the area belonging to the port to be notified as PBEZ was also handed over to the Port Chairman by the Ernakulam District Collector.

This will now facilitate the Ministry of Commerce and Industry to notify the area as PBEZ, from which date all entrepreneurs establishing their units in that area would get the concessions available in PBEZ, the port officials said.

In the meeting, the various aspects of land acquisition and action to be taken to implement the road and rail connectivity projects in a time-bound manner were also discussed and milestones were fixed.

It was decided that the application for environment clearance for National Highway connectivity should reach the Environment Ministry and Forest within 60 days. The land acquisition works would be completed within 100 days, the officials added.

Regarding the rail alignment, it was decided to form a committee consisting of senior officials from Railways, Kochi Port and the State Government to study and monitor the alignment works in such a way that the revised alignment is fixed up within 60 days.

Dr Jacob Thomas, the Port Chairman, Mr A.P.M. Mohammed Haneesh, the District Collector, along with officials from the Southern Railway, NHAI, officials from various State Government Departments participated in the discussions.
