Politics EC seeks more powers to raise quality of polls Our Bureau
Hyderabad , April 20 THE Election Commission of India wants the Union Government to equip it with powers to disqualify and impose penalty on those who violate the model of conduct. The Commission has decided to make an appeal to the Government, asking it to give legislative shape to the model code. Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday to brief on the conference of State Election Commissioners, Mr T.S. Krishna Murthy, Chief Election Commissioner, said vesting powers with the CEC would help improve quality of elections. The conference was attended by State Election Commissioners (SECs) from 24 States. It deliberated on coordination between the SECs and the EC. The meeting also wanted to keep a bar on candidates contesting from more than one constituency. They should be made to pay Rs 10 lakh (for contesting for more than one Lok Sabha seat) and Rs 5 lakh (Assembly). The conference felt that the State panels should build a reserve of at least 25 per cent of the total electronic voting machines required.
