Madurai Kamaraj varsity microbial department grooming patent culture

Our Correspondent

Madurai , April 21

THE Department of Microbial Technology of the Madurai Kamaraj University has ushered in a patent culture, under which the post-graduate students, led by the faculty, generate patents under the university system and graduate with a degree and a patent in hand.

According to the Head of the Department, Dr S. Shanmugasundaram, the concentration is on bio-nano therapeutics.

The final year students of microbial gene technology are encouraged to work on the patents. Already seven patents have been filed at the Chennai Office and four more are in the pipeline.

They put hundreds of man-hours in data mining and research before being ready with their process. A no-risk vaccine for rabies is expected to generate a great demand. Drug designing for various complications such as high cholesterol, cancer and heart ailments are pursued.

The Department has plans to approach big companies for marketing rights and entrepreneur tapping through special meetings.

A Web site is to be launched to put the inventions on the net for more global reach.

If the money deals benefiting the university clicked, the students also will have a share in them. A target of 50 patents is the aim by 2008, he added.
