Education IIT-Kharagpur wing plans to offer 2 more management courses Our Bureau
Chennai , April 21 THE Vinod Gupta School of Management (VGSM) at the Indian Institute of Technology- Kharagpur plans to introduce two more management programmes, starting July 2006. Prof Kalyan Chakravarti, Dean, VGSM, said that the one of the new programmes would be a five-year dual degree programme leading to B.Tech (Hons) in any branch of engineering and MBA. The second programme is a tailor-made sponsored MBA programme for officers of the Defence Services. Prof Chakravarti said that this course would help officers to qualify for jobs in civilian life, too. This will be a full 4-semester, 2-year residential programme. A variation of the sponsored tailor-made MBA programme is the postgraduate diploma in business administration (PGDBA). This programme is of relevance to the Indian Air Force Prof Chakravarti said that IIT Kharagpur was the first IIT to start a management science programme and today has an annual intake of 120 students in the MBA programme. It also has a programme for working executives, which is a postgraduate diploma in business administration The US-based Mr Vinod Gupta, an IIT Kharagpur alumnus, with an endowment of $2 million, set up the management science facility in 1993. Prof Chakravarti said that VGSM has been benchmarking against the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Kolkata. VGSM has also decided to charge less than IIM, Kolkata and the fees charged are Rs 90,000 compared with the Rs 1.3 lakh by the latter. The VGSM also plans to introduce distance education, Prof K.K.Guin, Associate Dean and Professor, VGSM, said.
