AZADI Bachao Andolan (ABA) will launch an anti-VAT (value-added tax) campaign in Karnataka from Mangalore on May 1.
Addressing presspersons here on Friday, the ABA convenor, Mr Rajiv Dixit, said that such campaigns have been launched in 10 North Indian States.
He said that this system of taxation is in favour of multinational companies as value-addition to the commodity is done only once.
In the case of small traders, it is done in different stages. This will affect the interest of small traders, as they have to pay tax at every stage.
Stating that the countries having a stronghold in manufacturing sector have not implemented VAT, he said those who depend mainly on trading activities have gone in for this system. America, which has a major share in manufacturing sector, has not implemented it.
Though the Union Government claims that 123 countries in the world have implemented VAT, they do not have a stronghold in manufacturing sector.
He demanded that the judicial and executive powers granted to the tax officials under VAT system be taken back.
If the Government is serious about VAT, it should abolish indirect taxes. Mr Dixit said that there is no indirect tax in 123 countries where VAT system is in force.
He said, "In our country there are 13 indirect taxes." The country should have only CENVAT (Central VAT) and not the State VAT system, Mr Dixit said.
The ABA campaign will explain the implications of VAT on Indian economy, he added.
