Tirupur dyers resume operations

Our Bureau

Coimbatore , April 22

A DAY after deciding to indefinitely suspend their production work, the wet-processing industries in Tirupur came round to reconsider their stand and resume work.

This follows a strong move by various textile industries trade bodies in Tirupur led by local leaders of political parties which dissuaded the 600-odd dyeing and bleaching units from going ahead with their earlier decision to halt their production work.

After a four-hour meeting of different textile industry associations held on Thursday under the leadership of Mr Mohan Kandasamy, President of the South India Hosiery Manufacturers Association (SIHMA), the members of the dyeing industry decided to resume work by respecting the views expressed by the hosiery industry as a whole.

According to Mr N. Kandasamy, President of the Dyers Association of Tirupur, which called upon the dyers to halt production activity respecting the sentiments expressed by the Madras High Court Greenbench on the pollution caused by the Tirupur industry, his association had to reconsider the issue and asked its members to resume work from today in view of the appeals made by the textile trade and industry in the hosiery town. "We felt the closure of the wet processing industries in the town for a day yesterday was enough to reflect that the Tirupur industries were law abiding. We had to reconsider our earlier stand of closing down indefinitely all the wet processing activity as the Tirupur industry especially those involved in export activities expressed fear of losing business to the competing countries," he added.

According to industry sources, all the dyeing units in Tirupur resumed work from this morning.
