Chennai , April 22

SHANGRI-LA Hotels and Resorts, one of the leading luxury hotel groups in the Asia Pacific region, has entered the Indian market with Traders Hotel in Chennai.

Mr Symon Bridle, Vice-President, Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts, said that the group planned to rollout both its brands, Shangri-La and Traders Hotels, in all the four metros in India.

Shangri-La properties are primarily deluxe city centre and resort hotels with over 300 rooms, he said. The name Shangri-La was inspired by the legendary land featured in James Hilton's "The Lost Horizon." Traders Hotels are premium business hotels.

The group's premium end offering, Shangri-La New Delhi will be ready by the end of summer, he said.

The company plans to launch three new projects — Shangri-La, Traders and City Resort - in Bangalore by August 2007. The Group has signed management contracts with the Adarsh Group to operate the new hotels in Bangalore.

Traders Hotels will also come up in Mumbai, Gurgaon, Hyderabad and Pune. He said that there would be 8 to 10 Traders Hotels in India, in 4 to 5 years time.

Mr Bridle said that the company planned to introduce spas at some of the Shangri-La properties. The company entered the growing spa market with `Chi' in July 2004.

The Traders Hotel in Chennai, located in T.Nagar, a shopping and commercial business district, has 162 rooms with data ports and broadband connectivity.

The facilities include a contemporary Indian restaurant, a bar, a rooftop restaurant, which will open in the second phase, swimming pool and health club.

Mr J. Sandeep Annand, Director, J-Hotels Ltd, the company which developed the hotel, said that the project cost was about Rs 100 crore. He said that the company had purchased the adjacent plot for car parking.

Mr Sandeep Annand said that as a part of the plans of J-Hotels, a Shangri-La in Chennai was on the cards. About 15 grounds of land have been identified in Nungambakkam for this project, he said.
