`BPO industry must re-brand itself'

Our Bureau

Mumbai , April 23

THE Indian BPO industry should move beyond its present USP of being its cost effective, and re-brand itself in terms of value addition, competition and innovation.

This was the main recommendation of the Indo-American Chamber of Commerce (IACC) at the two-day Global Offshoring Outsourcing Summit 2005 that ended here. The theme of the summit was `Offshoring: The scaling challenge'.

With wages continuing to rise at 10-15 per cent coupled with shortage of skilled manpower, the cost-effective model no longer holds good, said a press release. As per a McKinsey report, the BPO industry is set to grow up to $1.2 billion from the current $0.3 billion, in the next two years. IACC recommended that both private and public investments in infrastructure were required to meet the need of the BPO industry. One of the most serious threats for BPO companies in India comes from the hidden cost of substandard infrastructure, the release said.

On creating a secure environment, the IACC said an effective mechanism should be implemented for information sharing among industry, Government and other interested parties.
