Hyderabad — home for senior citizens from Belgium

M. Somasekhar

Hyderabad , April 23

IF Indians, particularly the youth are flocking to the cool climes of Europe for both a holiday or jobs in the IT sector, the ageing citizens of some European countries could soon start journeying to India for a cared stay.

Firming up plans to bring `senior citizens', particularly from Belgium is Corsendonk, a hospitality and financial services major.

The company is acquiring land on the outskirts of Hyderabad, to set up a `senior home', which would provide top class facilities for the aged.

"Beginning 2007, our plans are to throw open the senior homes to senior citizens from Belgium. The offshore senior homes, would cater to the best possible needs of its residents," said Ms Rama Yeldhandi, Managing Director of Corsendonk Consultants, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Belgium major.

While the salubrious climate and the beautiful Alpine resorts are a lure for Indian tourists and the growing demand for computer professionals a major draw, for the ageing Belgians the personalised care with a human touch at a cost effective rate could be a big draw.

The Belgian company is talking to Sujana Group to partner in the venture.

It plans to invest Rs 15 crore and acquire about 15 acres of land to create the necessary infrastructure, she told Business Line.

Showing interest to partner in Senior Homes is another Belgium company, which runs 15 such facilities across Europe, Ms Yeldhandi, said.

Corsendonk Consultants set up its India office in Hyderabad in November last.

It has already bid for a 3-star hotel project in the Cyberabad region of Hyderabad.

It is the only foreign firm to apply for the Expression of Interest (EOI) to the State Tourism Department floated tenders, Ms Yeldhandi said.

Though Belgium does not have a significant presence in India, of late the interest has been growing, with the need for IT professionals.

The Consul-General, based in Mumbai, is also expected to visit the State next month and explore opportunities in Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam, she said.

In Belgium, the company runs a chain of 6 mid-sized hotels (270 rooms) in the name of Hotel Corsendonk.
