Award for Bharat Forge, Prabha Engineers

BHARAT Forge Ltd and the Chennai-based Prabha Engineers have received `outstanding organisation' and `outstanding small scale unit' awards for quality, from the National Institution for Quality and Reliability, here on Saturday.

Vellore Institute of Technology received the award for `educational institution'. The award for `outstanding service organisation' went to Nutal Mumbai Tiffin Box Suppliers' Association, or the Dabbawallas of Mumbai. Mr C. Narasimhan, President, Sundaram-Clayton, received the award for individuals.

Accepting the award Dr Baba N. Kalyani, Chairman and Managing Director, Bharat Forge, said that the company supplied to 38 global automotive OEMs or tier-I suppliers. He said that the company aimed to become "the No.1 forging company in the world".

The citation for Prabha Engineers, which supplies `front end structures' and `rear load bodies' to Ashok Leyland, notes that "being small is not a constraint" for the company. "It has been using modern techniques such as kanban, 5S, 3M initiatives, X-matrix and lean manufacturing techniques," the citation says.

"The excellent employer-employee relationship has resulted in enhanced customer delight year after year and helped in receipt of the prestigious Platinum Award in sheet metal category from Ashok Leyland," it notes.

The citation for Vellore Institute of Technology points out that the institution has "excellent infrastructure in 250 acres of land with covered area of 1.9 lakh sq metres and 85 doctorates in 358 faculty members."
