Bajaj Hindusthan emerges top sugar producer

Harish Damodaran

New Delhi , April 24

BAJAJ Hindusthan Ltd (BHL) has overtaken Balrampur Chini to emerge as the country's leading sugar manufacturer.

According to latest data available from the Cane Commissioner's office in Uttar Pradesh, BHL's three factories at Golagokarannath, Palia Kalan and Kinnouni together produced 4.03 lakh tonnes (lt) of sugar during the current 2004-05 crushing season (October-September) till March 31.

During the same period of the previous season - when the Kinnouni unit had not gone on stream - the company's output stood at only 2.64 lt.

In fact, till the 2003-04 season, BHL's sugar production was below that of Balrampur Chini, Triveni Engineering & Industries Ltd, the K.K. Birla Group and Dhampur Sugar Mills Ltd. But with the commissioning of its new Kinnouni plant near Meerut, the company has moved up four places to occupy the No. 1 slot in Uttar Pradesh and in the country.

During the current season (till March 31), Balrampur Chini four units at Balrampur, Babhnan, Tulsipur and Haidergarh produced 3.73 lt of sugar (3.53 lt). The corresponding output figures amounted to 3.51 lt (3.22 lt) for the K.K. Birla Group's factories at Seohara, Hargaon, Aira and Rosa; 3.37 lt (3.24 lt) for Triveni Engineering's Khataoli, Deoband and Ramkola units; and 3.26 lt (2.70 lt) for Dhampur Sugar's plants at Dhampur, Mansurpur, Asmouli and Rozagaon.

Among other leading sugar manufacturers in the State, Siel Ltd's Mawana and Titawi units produced 2.49 lt (2.14 lt), while the same for DCM Shriram Consolidated Ltd's Rupapur and Ajbapur plants and Simbhaoli Sugar Mills Ltd's factories at Simbhaoli and Chilwaria amounted to 1.48 lt (1.25 lt) and 1.43 lt (1.16 lt), respectively. The Daurala Sugar Works of DCM Shriram Industries produced 1.25 lt (1.12 lt).

With more than 90 per cent of cane crushing operations in Uttar Pradesh completed by March-end, the above company-wise production figures are unlikely to register substantial upward revision, barring that for Dhampur and Simbhaoli. Both these companies have imported around 75,000 tonnes of raw sugar each, which they are likely to process in the off-season from May.
