HP thrust on mobility products

HEWLETT Packard (HP), a global technology solutions provider, will aggressively push its mobility solutions, including notebook personal computers, handheld devices and digital projectors in Asia-Pacific (APAC), including India.

The company has launched a range of new mobility products even as it announced its APAC mobility strategy and initiatives for the year.

At a press conference here, the company unveiled the HP mP3135 digital projector, HP Pavilion dv4000 notebook PC series and a handheld device, whose global launch is scheduled for June 8.

Mr See Chin Tek, Vice-President, Consumer Products and Mobile Business, HP Imaging and Personal Systems Group (Asia Pacific and Japan), told newspersons that 2005 would be the year of mobility, and HP is going to focus aggressively on mobility products in the APAC region. HP had a 47-per cent market share in APAC in the fourth quarter of 2004 for digital projectors, said Mr Tek.

A businessman on travel can make presentations to a client through HP's handheld device that is Wi-Fi (wireless fidelity) enabled, by using a digital projector.

Wi-Fi is like a mobile phone that allows one to connect to the Internet. Wi-Fi enabled computers send and receive data indoors and out, anywhere within the range of a base station.

According to Mr Tek, the new mobile devices in the APAC market are aimed at providing consumers and businesses mobile solutions that will enable them to increase productivity at work and stay connected to information when and where they need it.

With the company's quarterly financial results to be released shortly, Mr Tek declined to give any financial details, saying it was a quiet period.

`India, China key areas'

INDIA and China would be important countries for HP to push its mobile solutions, Mr See Chin Tek, Vice-President, Consumer Products and Mobile Business, HP Imaging and Personal Systems Group (Asia Pacific and Japan), told Business Line.

The gap between notebook personal computers and a desktop PC is narrowing, and the sale of notebook PCs in India and China is growing at a rapid pace, said Mr Tek.

Quoting figures of a third party, Mr Tek said that in consumer notebooks and commercial notebooks HP was ranked number one in India, with 56 per cent and 32.5 per cent market shares respectively. "We expect a similar trend in future."

Reduction in customs duty for IT hardware by the Centre had helped increase sale of PCs and notebook PCs in India, he said.
