Empowering India

The article "Tech constraint trips plan for cheaper power" (Business Line, April 25) gives a small indication why we are far behind other countries in infrastructure development. It is not only deplorable but also baffling that the 660 MW technology that even South Africa could adopt decades back is not used by India till now. That it is a retrograde step is no excuse.

Why can the government look towards its own oil resources before hunting elsewhere? Reports say that Chhattisgarh is taking the lead in the production of bio-diesel from jatropha seeds. Why can't other states follow suit? Wind and solar energy have good scope for development. Further, R&D should be directed to these sectors.
