SPORTS goods maker adidas is targeting four-fold sales growth from Indian operations within the next three years and would then consider making this country its hub for South-East Asian operations.

While declining to divulge investment or sales numbers, adidas India Marketing Pvt Ltd's Managing Director, Mr Andreas Gellner, said that at present, in Pakistan, Bangladesh, Maldives, Nepal and Bhutan operations are run through distributors who report to the South-East Asian headquarters in Hong Kong.

"India could become the South-East Asian hub for adidas in the mid-term, three years from now. By then, we are expecting to grow sales by four times. Last year, sales in Malaysia was the highest in this region but we expect India to lead this year," he said after unveiling the intelligent shoe called `adidas_1' here.

He said that adidas_1 works like a human reflex nerve. It is incorporated with a magnetic sensing system. On every impact, this sensor measures the distance from top to bottom of the mid-sole, gauging the compression and the amount of cushioning being used.

"adidas_1 revolutionary technology ensures that no matter what your weight, how heavy your foot strikes, how fast you run or even the surface you are running on, the shoe senses, adapts and provides the right amount of cushioning," he said.

The new product will be available in select stores and is priced at Rs 12,499. Mr Gellner said that next year the company may bring out adidas_1 for women.
