Singareni workers plan indefinite strike

Hyderabad , April 27

THE employees of Singareni Collieries Company Ltd (SCCL) have threatened to launch an indefinite strike in favour of the implementation of the Seventh Wage Board Accord, even as the three-day strike concluded on Wednesday.

The strike has disrupted the underground mining, with just nine out of 54 working during the three days. However, work went on well in all the 11 opencast mines. A company spokesman said the strike resulted in a loss of Rs 20 crore. The production in the first two days averaged 82,000 tonnes as against a target of 1.11 lakh tonnes. On the final day, the first shift production stood at 26,000 tonnes against a target of 37,000 tonnes. About 25 per cent of the 92,000 employees reported to duty, the spokesman told Business Line.

The strike in Adilabad and Warangal districts was complete. In Khammam, the attendance was in excess of 50 per cent, while it was 35 per cent in Karimnagar. In other places, it was in the range of 10 to 20 per cent.

Meanwhile employees unions warned that they might launch an indefinite strike if the management and Government fail to implement the accord.

Mr K. Ravi, State Committee member of the Indian Federation of Trade Unions, told Business Line that the three-day strike by the workers was successful despite the arm-twisting measures by the management.
