Work resumes on Vijayawada flyover, to be ready by May 5

Vijayawada , April 27

LARSEN and Toubro (L&T) resumed work last week on the flyover across the railway line in the one town area near the Kaleswara Rao market here and the flyover is expected to be ready by May 5.

Minor works such as closing of expansion joints and black-topping of the approach roads were left unfinished because of a hitch in the final payment to the company by the Vijayawada-Guntur-Tenali Urban Development Authority. It has been cleared and the work is in progress now.

The UDA entrusted the construction of the flyover to RITES,which has completed the technical survey and in turn signed an agreement with the L&T for construction of the flyover. It was scheduled to be completed and inaugurated August 28, 2004, on the occasion of Krishna Pushkaram (river fete). There was an accident on the first day of the Krishna Pushkaram and the Chief Minster could not formally inaugurate the flyover, though the main structure was in place by then. However, the flyover was kept open to pedestrians through the 12-day river fete and closed later.

A meeting was held recently in which the representatives of the UDA, RITES and the L&T participated.

The company reportedly asked for payment of an additional Rs. 3.16 crore towards interest and idle manpower expenses. But it was not granted.

However, the final payment of Rs. 6.16 crore was released.
