Chennai , April 27

DISHNET Wireless Ltd, part of the Chennai-based Sterling Infotech Group, has launched its Wi-Fi (wireless fidelity) services in Chennai.

The company plans to invest Rs 250 crore in the next 12 months to promote the new service across India, according to Mr V.G. Suri, Vice-President (Sales and Marketing), Dishnet Wireless.

The new service will be marketed under the `Red' brand name, he told newspersons.

Wi-Fi is used for wireless connectivity to the Internet or to local area network (LAN). It operates on the standard protocol of 802.11b and enables Internet access over a small area, which is called hotspot, through a transmitter.

According to Mr Suri, in the first phase, the company plans to launch its services in eight cities, including the four metros and Pune, Hyderabad and Bangalore and, subsequently, cover 38 cities in 12-18 months. About 6,000 hotspots would be set up across India.

Currently, there are 107 hotspots signed up across Chennai of which 53 are operational, and the remaining would be operational in the next 35 days.

Mr Suri said that the company would launch its corporate and enterprise solutions by mid-May and the WiMax technology (wireless technology that provides high-throughput broadband connections over long distances) by June end.

The company hopes to get revenues of Rs 107 crore from the new service in the first year of operation. Enterprise solutions would contribute 50 per cent of revenue, wireless broadband 30 per cent and WiFi 20 per cent, he said.

To access Internet, users need a Wi-Fi enabled laptop personal computer or a handheld device or a separate Wi-Fi card. One needs to obtain a Dishnet RED Access Pass to connect to the Internet through WiFi service. According to Mr Vinesh Paperwala, District Manager, South Asia, Manufacturing, Energy and Telecom, Intel Technology India Pvt Ltd, the company would certify that the hotspots are of uniform standard, and support Dishnet Wireless in marketing activities.
