Letters Fighting diabetes
This refers to the article "Put up a vigorous fight" (Business Line April 23). The article on diabetes has brought out some important demographic/patient-oriented statistics. These will help formulate certain hypotheses on the possible factors, and the cause-and-effect relationships of the condition. Rigorous research based on statistical methods can bring new insights and help isolate and segment potential diabetics from among various professionals. Efforts can be made to prevent the onset of the disease through genetic mapping. Further, other operations research techniques can bring new insights and spur further research for identifying critical factors and inter-factor relationships relevant to Indian conditions, food habits and lifestyles. Several medical universities in the US have been conducting continuous research based on statistical methods. Analysis such as multiple correlation and regression methods can bring out the cause and effect relationships and can be generalised with a high degree of accuracy. Also, several test criteria based on quantitative methods, and adequate and representative samples can test these hypotheses against the intelligent opinions/estimates of doctors based on their experiences. In diagnosis and treatment, a more rational approach can be adopted rather than the trial and error methods often used by many medical practitioners. Currently, a large amount of data is available with medical research organisations. With the advantage of skilled research manpower and the requisite expertise, this data can be used successfully to spread awareness among professionals working in sedentary and high-stress environments, so that prevention is possible.
