ONGC to buy HAL copters

BANGALORE: The advanced light helicopters made by Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) have found one more customer. ONGC has expressed interest in acquiring 3-4 of the 14-seater `Dhruv' helicopters for its offsore and on-shore activities across the country.

The company has also sought to use HAL's expertise in maintaining industrial and marine gas turbine engines.

The ONGC CMD, Mr Subir Raha, signed an MoU for wide-ranging cooperation with HAL during a visit to Bangalore here on Friday, HAL announced on Saturday. The MoU opens up new areas of mutual support and new business models, it said.

The HAL CMD, Mr Ashok Baweja, offered innovative support packages for heli services apart from the upkeep of the exploration major's turbine engines.

Mr Raha visited the Helicopter Division and flew over Bangalore inspecting the corporation sites.

Chile is another serious potential buyer for the Dhruv. A high-level official Chilean delegation led by the Defence Minister witnessed its flight on Saturday.
