`Insurance agents must be certified planners'

L.N. Revathy

Coimbatore , May 1

YOUR insurance agent can become your financial adviser too. This is what successful insurance agents are aspiring to be to survive in a competitive environment.

The Life Underwriters Guild of India (LUGI) has at various forums emphasised the importance of education to its members. The LUGI President, Mr P. Srinivasan, told Business Line, said: "Less than 10 persons are certified planners today."

Mr Srinivasan's focus has turned to education since taking over as the Honorary Secretary of the Asia Pacific Financial Services Association, last month. Stated to be the first Indian to have been elected to this post, Mr Srinivasan said during his two-year term , his task would be to motivate and ensure that more agents become financial planners/advisers.

"LUGI's focus is in enrolling 500 to 1,000 agents this year for the CFP examination," he said, and added that an independent board conducted the examination twice a year. The Asia Pacific Financial Services Association, Mr Srinivasan said, proposed to conduct the FCHFP (Fellow, Chartered Financial Practitioner) examination also in India from this year.
