The e-choupal scheme

This is with reference to the editorial "Price support lessons" (Business Line, April 22).

I think the Minimum Support Price scheme has been designed for the concerned officials and a few middlemen to make some easy money, as the editorial suggests. If the Government is seriously interested in helping farmers, it should take a look at what ITC Ltd has done.

The company's e-choupal scheme, which empowers farmers by giving them access, through computers, to all information needed to handle the marketing of their produce to get the optimum benefits, is really commendable. The government would do well to adopt this scheme.
