Hyderabad , May 1

ATI Technologies, a $2-billion US company, has opened its research and development (R&D) centre at Hyderabad.

The Managing Director of its Indian subsidiary, Mr Dasaradha R. Gude, said it would be the largest engineering centre outside of North America and offers services to consumer and PC business units.

ATI, design and manufacture of innovative 3D graphics and digital media silicon solutions company, has recently completed acquisition of the Hyderabad-based CuTe Solutions to broaden its audio and digital media product offerings.

Mr Gude said ATI Technologies in India would retain CuTe's employees and also add additional engineering resources to strengthen its team.

Kicking off the R&D operations with an 80 headcount, of whom 77 were engineers, the company plans to go aggressive in hiring significant numbers during this year. "The company plans investments in tens of million dollars," the ATI Chief Technology Officer and Senior Vice-President, Mr Adrian Hartog, said.

According to Mr Gude, the Hyderabad facility would focus on research and development of next generation audio and digital media products that would help broaden ATI's offerings for consumer electronic devices and PCs. It would also strengthen ATI's position as the industry leader in digital multimedia solutions for all platforms.

Further, the Hyderabad facility would also work on developing chipsets for PCs, cell phones and high-definition televisions, he said.

"Over the next five years, ATI plans to make a multi-million dollar investment in research and development.. This year, our focus is to hire over a hundred engineers ," Mr Adrian Hartog said.
