Matisse patents networking tool

LIKE the impressionist painter Henri Matisse, who used an array of colours to bring life to his paintings, a US-based start-up is working on mastering the colour of light to extend the benefits of packet technology.

Deriving its name from the legendary French painter, Matisse Networks has a patented DWDM Packet Switch, which packs 64 wavelengths of light onto a single fibre to offer a new type of networking.

The approach is radically different from the traditional circuit-based optical architectures. Major advantages include doing away with complex and costly circuits, availability of bandwidth when and where required and intelligent packet routing.

In short, the distributed multi-protocol switch it is developing would help extend the reach of bandwidth beyond data centre boundaries and build multi-service metro networks. The target beneficiaries include huge campuses, Government institutions or organisations which have activity distributed on campuses or within metropolitan areas, according to Mr Sam Mathan, its CEO.

The California-based company, formed in 2002, has raised $21 million through venture funds - Menlo Ventures, Walden International and Woodside Fund. It plans to launch a series of products based on DWDM optical Packet Switching technology starting from the end of 2005, he told newspersons.

At present Nortel Networks, Cisco, Alcatel, Lucent etc. serve the DWDM area, by offering a combination of routes. "We bring efficiency, lower costs in managing network solutions with the switch using fewer network devices and operating different light wavelengths which are switched to different destinations dynamically," Mr Mathan said.

The company has appointed Ms L.R. Jayanthi as the Head for its India Design Centre based in Hyderabad. The Hyderabad design centre will contribute significantly in the development of the next generation products. The manpower would be augmented depending on need, he said.
