CII signs pact with TN agency

Coimbatore , May 1

THE Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Coimbatore zone has not remained content with just marketing Coimbatore as the ideal IT destination among tier II towns. The idea mooted almost four years back has finally started to take shape, though not at the expected pace. Having accomplished this much, CII has moved on, but this time with the idea of making the place a `dream city.'

Towards realising this vision, the CII has signed an agreement with the Tamil Nadu Road Development Company Ltd (TNRDC) for conducting a feasibility study to make Avinashi Road a "world class urban highway."

A 16-km stretch on the Avinashi Road from the Anna Flyover (within the city) to the L&T bypass junction (near Nilambur on the outskirts) is being taken up for the study. The project outlay has been estimated at Rs 20 lakh.

Briefing presspersons, the CII Coimbatore zone Chairperson, Ms Nandini Rangaswamy, said this was a corporate initiative sponsored by city-based industrial houses.

Though there are six arterial gateways to this city, the CII members had voted for a feasibility study of the Avinashi Road because the proposed IT park is expected to come up on this road, its proximity to the airport and the increased traffic flow on this route, she said.

The TNRDC Chief Executive Officer, Mr Rohit Modi, said the project report would be ready in three months time. `We will do a diagnostic study, which will be followed by a prescriptive and feasibility study,' he said.

On the Golden Quadrilateral, he said 85 per cent of the project was over and the remaining work would be complete by June next.
