`Contract jobs will become more acceptable'

Chennai , May 1

JOBS on contract, viewed with apprehension until now, will become more acceptable in the coming years, said Mr E. Balaji, Executive Director, Staffing Solutions, Ma Foi Management Consultants.

In an address to the students of SRM Institute of Science and Technology, including students from its school of management, presented as part of the BL Club series of lectures, he said more and more jobs would be offered on a contract basis in the coming decade. Currently, there are about one-lakh jobs in the country and 10 million in the US under contract. `Hire for attitude, train for skills' is the mantra recruiters employ, he said, adding that good academic performances, though vital, alone cannot guarantee employment. Ninety per cent scores, without a proper understanding of the subject, perspective and extra-curricular interests, may not help.

Sectors such as financial services, logistics, IT and telecom are booming; companies in these spheres need fresh talent and are willing to invest in training them, he said.

Mr K. Radhakrishnan, Vice-President, Marketing, FoodWorld, told the students that they must try and join a company in the line of work they like. Also, instead of opting of companies that pay attractive salaries, they should look to join companies that train them. He said every college must have sessions on communication skills. As you go higher and higher in an organisation, you need less and less of technical skills but more and more of managerial skills, said Mr Radhakrishnan, who started his career as a tea-taster.
