`VOICE IT' for the East

Our Bureau

Kolkata , May 1

THE Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC) has launched an initiative aimed at `Vitalising IT & communications in the East."

The initiative seeks to provide a platform for IT&ITES entrepreneurs to address common issues and needs and act as a forum for networking with other local and regional entrepreneurs.

Christened VOICE IT, the initiative seeks to maintain a close interface with the Centre and State governments in the eastern and north-eastern region for policy formulation pertaining to IT and IT enabled services (ITES). It will also facilitate exchange of information and best practices among member-firms, propagate and disseminate industry-relevant information and organise events and conferences.

Other objectives of the initiative include the preparation of a database of IT&ITES companies and brand building of Kolkata and the eastern region as an attractive destination for IT&ITES companies. VOICE IT will also conduct programmes tailored to meet the specific needs of stakeholders in the IT&ITES sector.

Speaking at a function held here to mark the launch of VOICE IT, Dr G.D. Gautama, Principal Secretary in West Bengal's Department of Information Technology, stressed upon the need to address the "perception problem" pertaining to Kolkata in particular and eastern India in general as an appropriate destination for IT&ITES companies.

"We need to speak about success stories," he said, and added that, for IT&ITES to get the required boost, it would be imperative to augment international air connectivity to and from the region.

According to Mr Umang Kanoria, president of ICC, the idea behind VOICE IT was to provide IT&ITES companies in the region with a "unique identity and a forum that is solely devoted to the promotion and business growth of the industry in the region."

VOICE IT "can and will make the difference for the IT and ITES network in this region," he added
