Travails of small depositors

This refers to the article "RBI takes note of the small depositor" (Business Line, April 29), which lists the problems faced by the small depositor while transacting with the banks. The minimum balance of Rs 1000 insisted upon by banks for savings accounts could be treated as a fixed deposit and interest paid accordingly.

Another unfair practice is the commission charged for clearing outstation cheques and for issuing Demand Drafts. The RBI must look into the matter.
