Fishermen preparing to go out to sea near Fort Kochi. The officials of the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) and the population enumerators will span 3,000 coastal villages across the country to make a headcount of fishing population, equipment and gear. The last national marine fisheries census was held in 1980 and the present one, costing Rs 80.5 lakh, will last a month.
