Roadways NHAI to take up four-laning of Tiruchi-Madurai Our Correspondent
Madurai , May 2 THE National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will soon start work on the four-laning of the 127-km Tiruchi-Madurai National Highway Project in NH 45B, catering to around 15,000 to 20,000 passenger car units a day. Tenders have been floated for the Rs 524-crore project, which is likely to commence by July-end and is expected to be completed in 30 months. With the backing of NHAI funds, the project is to be awarded in two packages from Tiruchi to Thuvarankurichi and from Thuvarankurichi to Madurai. The international bid for the works is to close on June 6. According to sources, the land acquisition for the project is in an advanced stage and there would not be any impediment for starting the works. Once completed, the project is expected to give fillip to the economic growth of the Central and Southern districts. As and when the four-laning of the Tindivanam-Tiruchi section gets completed, the drive from Chennai to Madurai will take about seven hours. Additionally, the rate of road mishaps in the accident-prone highway network in the State would also come down, the sources added.
