Kolkata , May 3

GLOBAL watch major Omega today announced plans to open 10-12 boutique stores in major cities across India within the next five years.

The company, which already has two such stores in Mumbai, plans to open stores in Chennai, Delhi, and Kolkata in the months ahead, according to Mr Jonathan Stalder, Area Sales Manager.

Speaking to newspersons to mark the launch of Omega's `Speedmaster Missions - Moon to Mars' exhibition, Mr Stalder said that for Omega, India's potential as a market was next only to China and the company was very upbeat about its growth plans here.

Over the last few years, Omega's sales in the country had registered a compounded average annual growth of around 20 per cent.

However, despite this, India's contribution to the $4-billion turnover of Omega International was negligible.

Mr Stalder refused to divulge Omega's turnover in India or the company's brand promotion budget in this country.

But he said that worldwide, the company spends 12-15 per cent of its turnover on marketing and brand promotion initiatives.

The Omega space exhibition displays the Lunar Rover that Omega ambassador and the last man to be on the moon, Eugene Cernan, drove on the moon, a spacesuit that he wore during one of his missions and other space equipment such as Sojourner, the Mars Rover.

Also on display is a special series of 22 limited edition Omega watches, each decorated with the patch of the NASA mission of which it was a part.

In commemoration of the 35th anniversary of man's first step on the moon, Omega has introduced the limited edition Speedmaster Professional Apollo 11 insignia range.

Priced at Rs 108,000 each, the limited edition of 3,500 individually numbered Omega Speedmaster Professional watches would be available in select Omega outlets across the country, according to Mr Stalder.
