BEST places order for wheel chair accessible buses

Mumbai , May 3

MUMBAI'S city bus service, popularly known as BEST, will be introducing 30 wheel-chair accessible low-floor buses to its fleet over the next six months.

An order has been placed with Tata Motors for the vehicles on the basis of competitive bidding, said a news release from Brihan Mumbai Electric Supply & Transport Undertaking. All the new vehicles will conform to Euro-III standards.

The decision to purchase wheel-chair accessible vehicles follows an order of the High Court. A hydraulic system will enable the floor to "kneel down" and tilt to the left; a ramp system enabling wheel chair passengers to enter the bus.

There are facilities in the bus to secure the wheelchairs too.

The buses are 12 metres in length as against the 10.6 metre-length of the regular buses.
