`IT sector earns Rs 1,00,000 cr'

Chennai , May 3

THE domestic IT sector crossed revenues of Rs 1,00,000 crore and provided direct employment to about 10 lakh people in fiscal 2004-05, said Mr Kiran Karnik, President, National Association of Software and Services Companies (Nasscom).

"These two were major landmarks for the sector (both software services and hardware)," he said at a function here.

In 2004-05, software exports were about $17 billion, 35 per cent more than that the previous year.

This was a strong growth in terms of exports, and the IT industry was the number one exporter for India. IT was also increasingly used within the country to enhance customer services and competitiveness, Mr Karnik said, after inaugurating a software park built by city-based R.R. Industries.

According to Mr Karnik, development of physical infrastructure in quick time is a major challenge. IT companies are not able to move people quickly and the sector needs more back-up power, he said.

Mr Vivek Harinarain, Tamil Nadu IT Secretary, said revenue from IT and IT-enabled services for the State was Rs 11,000-12,000 crore for the year ended March 31, 2005 compared to Rs 8,000 crore in the previous fiscal.

The IT and ITES industry in the State would provide direct employment to about a million people in the next four to five years, he said.

The State Government has initiated the Tamil Nadu State Wide Area Network to establish a network between the government and the businesses and the government and the citizen.

This will be available on a dedicated network, and the State Government would soon approach the Centre for funding the project.

The State is also setting up a single data centre of various State departments to help people access information from a single source. The project would be similar to eSeva in Andhra Pradesh, said Mr Harinarain.
