Education Higher education due for a major overhaul: ICFAI Our Bureau
Hyderabad , May 5 THE ICFAI University foresees a strong economic reforms process to take place in both healthcare and education segments in the near future. According to the ICFAI board Governor, Mr N.J. Yasaswy, the higher education field in the country was due for a major overhaul. Addressing a three-day `National Conclave of Leaders in Education' here on Thursday, he said the sweeping changes in the higher education segment would dismantle the existing system of territorial monopoly of universities. "In a territorial monopoly of universities, the students are deprived of choices in terms of courses and curriculum. Most of the Indian universities in the public sector are currently starved of funds and turned anaemic. This forces a need for consolidation of universities and also introduction of multi-university system by way of dismantling territorial monopoly of universities," Mr Yasaswy said. At the National Conclave, over 500 directors, principals, heads of departments and faculty of business schools, engineering and degree colleges from various parts of the country participated. The forum is expected to enable the participants exchange ideas and network with their counterparts from various academic institutions. According to Mr Yasaswy, such conclaves would be useful to understand the unfolding opportunities and address the challenges and the emerging importance of private sector educational institutions in the field of higher education. Terming the problem of reservations in higher education as a by-product of artificial scarcity on capacities created by the system, Mr Yasaswy said reservations would cease to exist once constraints imposed on capacities were removed and more private sector players were allowed into the field of higher education.
