THE Income Tax Department has decided to move the Supreme Court over keeping tabs on the applicants for liquor licences in the State.

About 1.43 lakh applicants deposited a whopping sum of Rs 1,900 crore, part of the licence fee, along with the applications. The I-T Department had swung into action to pin down possible tax offenders. It found several discrepancies that reflected the mismatch of IT records of several applicants and their ability to pay a huge fee for licences.

Addressing a conference here on Thursday, Mr P.A. Chowdary, Chief Commissioner of IT - I (Hyderabad), said a proposal had been sent to the Union Finance Ministry in this regard.

Regarding the region's performance during 2004-05, he said the total collections were at Rs 4,790 crore against Rs 3,822 crore in the previous year, registering a growth of 25 per cent. The number of assesses in the State was at 18.65 lakh during 2004-05.
