Climate & Weather Weather info - on the hour, every hour Vinson Kurian
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: AWSs generate hourly data on important weather parameters that are beamed to the Insat. It is relayed to ISRO's Space Applications Centre (SAC) in Ahmedabad, from where it is loaded to an FTP site. Both CUSAT and the Planning Board will access the data from this site. CUSAT will analyse the data and put up its contents on a dedicated site every evening. The Planning Board will forward the date to user departments in the Government. According to Dr Rajasekharan, an expert committee would be set up under the chairmanship of the Secretary, Agriculture, or the Agriculture Production Commissioner (APC) to decide the mode of data dissemination and the larger data policy. "We want to disseminate the data free of cost to the public," he added. Data generated is very valuable and could be put to use for various applications. For instance, the National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF), which brings out agriculture bulletin every three days, has only four stations in the State. Number of the se centres can now be raised. Another application is disease forecasting. Meteorology models for this are available but data is scarce. At least three or four diseases can be forecast in advance, provided data is available. A third application is prediction of local weather.
