Bio-tech & Genetics Oommen Chandy to lay foundation for Kinfra biotech park near Kochi today Our Bureau
Kochi , May 9 THE Chief Minister, Mr Oommen Chandy, will lay the foundation stone for the Kinfra Biotechnology Park at nearby Kalamassery tomorrow. Kinfra has already acquired 50 acres at Kalamassery, where it owns 240 acres. Another 50 acres is available for future expansion. The total cost of setting up of the biotech park is estimated at Rs 39.58 crore, including cost of land, site development and buildings. The total cost of the Biotechnology Incubation Centre (BTIC) is estimated at Rs 23.90 crore, with contribution from Department of Biotechnology at Rs 11 crore. The sources of income would be rentals from hiring of the common facilities in the BTIC and the use of support services. The BTIC would operate as a self-sustained unit, a release said. The park would be a combination of a technology incubation centre providing modules for R&D in biotechnology, a pilot plant, and a business enterprise zone comprising developed plots to be utilised for setting up of industrial units. The development works would be taken up in two phases. In the initial phase, a building of incubation centre would be constructed followed by other wings of the park, said Dr G.C. Gopala Pillai, Managing Director, Kinfra. The park would focus on the commercial applications of biotechnology and the thrust area of the project would be practical application and utility of the bio-resources in the State. The first phase is the setting up of the technology incubation centre on 1.5 acres and development of oriented facility on an area of 32,000 sq ft, he added. Kinfra would procure the required equipment and the labs would be allotted to entrepreneurs on lease basis. The estimate for the technology incubation centre building has been sanctioned and tendering procedures have been initiated, he said. According to Dr Pillai, biotechnology offers immense potential in revolutionising various sectors of industry such as healthcare, agriculture, environmental and process industry. "Kerala is uniquely positioned for harnessing the biotechnological applications to promote industry growth due to the rich biodiversity, conducive climate, and network of established research institutes."
