Kochi , May 10

THE State Government is taking a positive approach for industrial development in the State as Kerala is lagging behind other States in industrialisation, the Chief Minister, Mr Oommen Chandy has said.

Speaking after laying the foundation stone for the Kinfra biotechnology park at nearby Kalamassery on Tuesday, the Chief Minister said that Kerala had become a favourable destination for investment after the Global Investors' Meet.

"However, this atmosphere should fully be exploited by attracting more and more investors to the State."

The development of the agriculture sector acquires momentum in the era of globalisation and liberalisation. For this, biotechnology has to play a vital role for its development. Therefore, the Government has decided to give equal preference to biotechnology and IT, he added.

The State Industries Minister, Mr V.K. Ibrahim Kunju presided over the function.

The park set up by Kinfra would be a combination of a technology incubation centre providing modules for R&D in biotechnology, a pilot plant, and a business enterprise zone comprising developed plots to be utilised to set up industrial units.

The development works would be taken up in two phases. The park would focus on the commercial applications of biotechnology and the thrust area of the project would be practical application and utility of the bio-resources in the State.
