Mumbai , May 10 THE Taiwan-based computer hardware and mobile handset manufacture, BenQ Corp, is planning to expand its Indian software engineering team to cater to its global mobile software requirements. Its technology development centre in Mumbai which employs 50 people will likely be expanded to twice its size in a year's time, said Mr K.Y. Lee, Chief Executive Officer, BenQ, at a news conference here on Tuesday. Eventually the R&D centre would employ hundreds of engineers. But unlike several other global handset manufacturers, BenQ has no plans to set up manufacturing facilities in the country, he said. The company's 3.1 per cent market share in the mobile handset market in India in 2004 is expected to grow to over 6 per cent during the current year, according to Mr Ashish Bakshi, Country Head, India operations. In the LCD market, the company aims to be among the top two brands in the country. BenQ has introduced mobile handsets, LCD projectors, televisions and monitors in the country; subsequently it will introduce other products, especially laptops, said Mr Bakshi. Promotion for its LCD projects, is by way of road shows and frequent meetings with resellers, channel partners, as well as smaller dealers.
