Jadavpur varsity plans meet on waste management

Our Bureau

Kolkata , May 11

THE Centre for Quality Management Systems of Jadavpur University plans to organise a national symposium on municipal solid waste management here in July.

The symposium is being held to make the municipal authorities in West Bengal aware of solid waste management issues and ways and means of turning such waste into wealth.

Speaking to newspersons, Mr Sadhan K. Ghosh, co-ordinator of CQMS, said that the symposium was also part of the University's efforts to build a consensus for making solid waste management mandatory for the municipal sector in the country.

Stating that apart from some stray efforts, the country was yet to adopt effective waste management techniques, Mr Ghosh said that the four metros alone generated 2,500-3,500 tonne of solid waste every day, of which 3-5 per cent is plastic waste. He added that the share of plastic waste has increased with urbanisation.

Apart from bearing the high cost involved in removing this waste, the municipalities are also facing difficulty in finding suitable dumping grounds.
